It looks a little like Italy, but it's not. It's Chania town, the port.
There are great little restaurants and hotels/ apartments in this town where you'd be central to everything. We chose a quieter, and larger hotel about 5 minutes away, with a beach... but I see the allure of this kind of Cretan stay.
Best thing about Greece, is you pretty much get four cultures in one, plus, as my son found out... lots of pretty topless Scandinavians tanning seaside.
